As Getty’s Communications team continues to grow, the News and Media Relations team seeks a Communications Specialist who has a knack for unearthing compelling stories, has experience working with journalists, and is interested in a wide range of topics, including art, theater, antiquities, technology, and conservation.
Getty Communications oversees public relations, public affairs, marketing, and digital communications programs for Getty, including the Getty Research Institute, Conservation Institute, Foundation and Museum. The department seeks to inspire joy and insight by sharing art and the scholary output of Getty. We seek to increase global, national, and regional awareness of Getty and its impact as a prominent global institution advancing visual art and cultural heritage. Through creative content development, digital communications, media relations and advertising efforts, we expand access to Getty content and engage both professional and public audiences.
The Communications Specialist is responsible for various communications projects related to the Getty Center and Villa Museums, including assisting the Communications Manager with drafting press releases, press outreach and relationship development, media research, contributing to Getty’s news platform, and developing communications strategies. Position will also manage media outreach and communications planning for Getty Museum exhibitions, working in partnership with the Digital and Marketing teams.
This is a full-time position reporting to the Communications Manager.
Note: Los Angeles residency required. This position is NOT fully remote and consists of a hybrid in-office and WFH schedule.
Working closely with the Communications Manager, develops strategic, proactive communications and media plans related to Getty news and projects
Develops, executes, and oversees written communications of moderate complexity, including press releases, specialized pitch letters, presentations, talking points, and digital stories
Works closely with internal clients to position exhibitions and activities accurately and compellingly to the media
Proactively identifies and pitches news stories within areas of responsibility to local, regional, national, and international media
Strategically targets media to receive press materials, develops comprehensive press lists, and strategically pitches members of the press in accordance with communications plans
Receives, assesses, and processes image/information/interview requests from the media
Plans press previews and press visits to the Getty Center and/or Getty Villa as needed
Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Journalism, Communications, Art History, or related degree
A minimum of three years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience preferably in the visual arts
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Excellent written communication skills; experience writing press releases
Experience working with the media, preferably arts media
Excellent planning and/or project management and organizational skills
Ability to write and synthesize materials and communicate information effectively across print and digital platforms
Ability to be selfdirected and take initiative
Ability to partner with internal and external contacts at all levels
Demonstrated interpersonal skills in working with a variety of audiences
Experience using Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Design Suite, MailChimp and/or related tools, Cision and/or related media databases
